Konferencja Hevelius 2011 – Sesja 6 – Rienk Vermij

Rienk Vermij (University of Oklahoma, USA):

Hevelius on the Nature of the Universe

Hevelius rarely indulged in theoretical or speculative considerations. He refuted some main points of the Aristotelian world view, but his reaction to the scientific problems of the time consisted foremost in establishing an observational program. This raises the question of what his underlying views of nature were. His ideas on comets and new stars offer a clue. His idea that these arose from siderial exhalations appears similar to theories of natural philosophers from the first half of the seventeenth century, like Fromond, Beeckman, or Holwarda. Such theories drew their inspiration ultimately from the tradition of Aristotelian meteorology, which for some time seemed like a promising venue for the renovation of Aristotelian natural philosophy.
